First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

Around 17% of adolescents, 13% of young adults and 5% of older people engage in non-suicidal self-injury at least once in their lifetime.

NSSI is most common around the age of 15 and 16, and it becomes less so after the age of 17. This makes it all the more important to recognise non-suicidal self-injury in young people and to be able to offer first aid.

Those affected take great efforts to hide their injuries. This can make it difficult for those around them to recognise the signs. People who engage in NSSI, feel deeply ashamed and often don’t have their injuries treated. This can delay healing and increase the risk of infection and further problems. They are afraid to talk about it and are often plagued by feelings of guilt. Those close to them are often unsure how to bring up their observations and fears.

However, there are first aid measures that everyone can learn to help people who engage in non-suicidal self-injury.
